Forward Osmosis (FO)

What is Forward Osmosis?

Forward Osmosis (FO) is a cutting-edge membrane-based water treatment process. It uses osmotic pressure, not high hydraulic pressure, to draw water through a semi-permeable membrane. This natural flow mechanism enables highly efficient water recovery even in the most challenging environments with significantly lower energy use.

Low Energy Consumption

Operates without the need for high-pressure pumps, reducing operational costs.

Reduced Fouling

Membrane is less prone to clogging, extending lifespan and lowering maintenance.

High Recovery Efficiency

Excellent performance in high-salinity and high-contaminant water sources.

How It Works

  • A concentrated draw solution is applied to one side of a specialized membrane.
  • Feed water (e.g., wastewater or saline water) is placed on the other side.
  • Water naturally moves from the feed to the draw solution via osmotic pressure.
  • Clean water is recovered from the diluted draw solution through a secondary step.
